Artist Statement

When I paint or build papier maché, my goal is to make pieces that I find so beautiful that I can’t keep my eyes off them, or pieces that make me laugh. A successful piece of my art delights me. If you like it, too, it’s just that much better. It’s kind of like cooking dinner — I make food that is delicious and sensual and visually lovely. And if you’re around, I’ll make a plate for you, too.

I am most highly trained as a writer. However, I find that producing art — whether it be painting, papier maché, or whatever medium I’m working in — gives me a pleasure akin to making mud pies in the back yard. Total absorption and pleasure.

I lived in England and Italy for nearly a decade and experienced art and artifacts of the ancient world. I then worked long years in the corporate salt mines for the man. During this time, I made, bought, drew, painted, built, and explored art on the side. I collected influences and artifacts and experimented with many of them. Then, coalescing events occurred. There was a full eclipse of the moon, where it hung in the sky like a dull red weighty orb. And I went to the New Orleans and encountered Outsider Art.

At that point, I looked back over my artwork, collection, photographs, and life. I saw themes weaving in and out that have been true of humans in every age and time. We have a hunger and drive to create art — even when all we have is mud and sugar. And we have been looking up in the sky and wondering why we are here. I saw that without even realizing it, I was already sitting with the style and themes that I resonate to.

I have also worked as a typesetter and writer in publishing since I was 17 years old. I have a strong connection to the craft and content. Working in papier maché honors this craft. Putting words on the art marries the two art forms.

Our world is a garden of good & evil — full of mystery, cruelty, beauty, life, death, passion, and magic. We are fierce and bold and we can disappear in a twinkle, because we are fragile and small. Since we first made our mark on the earth, we have honored this mystery and longed for guidance. While wondering why are we here, we have consistently been drawn to images that move us — hands, moons, hearts, fire, and other potent symbols. In my art, I honor these natural attractions and desires. Through art, we connect to those who came before us as we walk the earth today. Make your mark.
