Bio

Rachel Olson has been working in ceramics and jewelry for nearly a decade. Aesthetically influenced by the process of decay, she works to create pieces for those inspired by ruin. She has tied these ideas to her interest in steampunk and has been creating work with rusty, recycled, and otherwise unwanted materials.

She recently received her bachelor of the arts from Lewis & Clark College in Studio Art with a concentration in Ceramics. At the moment, she is a managing editor of SteamPunk Magazine, a ceramics instructor, and a hawker of fine handicrafts.

Artist Statement

My aim is to (peaceably disassemble)/(destroy) western civilization with copper wire and rusty washers. (Perhaps they will be hidden in ceramic pots?) Hurrah for post-civ!

Statement on "Anachrotechnofetishism":

These pieces are early explorations of the post-civilized aesthetic. What kind of beauty can we find in our struggle, we the organic pitted against the ravages of industrialized society? What expression lies dormant in the begrimed detritus of civilization? Neither rejecting technology nor accepting it unquestioningly, I choose to appropriate the symbols of industry to suit my own ends.
