I approach my artwork through a combination of inspiration and intuition. Although I start my pieces with an initial plan or sketch, much of my process is found through discovery and exploration; surfaces are built up, incised, obscured, and scraped away. I often find my most successful and engaging work utilizes the hap-hazard and erratic nature of the medium, allowing me to embrace all the "happy accidents".
My paintings express the relationships between the individual moments, natural and intimate, that are reminiscent of the life around me - - the place I live, the colors and shapes I encounter on a daily basis. Whether I'm working abstract or representational I am compelled by the subtleties of the surface – the depths of which invite a closer, more contemplative look.
The complexities of both encaustics and monotypes allow me to transcend the everyday obstacles I encounter as an artist. Each of these mediums can be transparent, opaque, luminous, sensuous [encaustics are lovely to feel] and everything in between. The magic of pulling that final image from a printing plate will never cease to delight and intrigue me. The organic and earthy quality of wax -- from the pure product of the honey bees to the natural resin of the Malaysian fir tree -- is very much alive and an exciting challenge to work with.
