Artist Statement

When I look back at my childhood, it’s no wonder I’m the artist I am today. From Transformers and Smurfs on Saturday mornings, to stained glass windows and gothic steeples on Catholic school days, I spent my formative years immersed in a sea of stimulating lighter fluid that kept my creative spark lit to a 5-alarm blaze. My horror flick-loving mom and sci-fi geek dad raised me on a healthy dose of Vitamin-sci-fi and Complex-comic-book. The combined effects left me with the centerpiece of my artistic expression – a robust imagination. And for as long as I can remember, that imagination has pushed me to feed it square meals of worldly kibble, and exercise it by constantly creating art.

When crafting pieces, I call on those childhood years of influence, as well as my more recent years of experience. Since graduating with a BA in Illustration in 2000, I’ve chosen a wide range of materials to work with that has gradually been narrowed to a group of dependable elements that define my work. Yet I still find myself revisiting mediums and techniques from my past as much as I experiment with new ones. The same can be said for the themes in my work. I’m constantly pulling ideas from the world around me and contrasting them with things from the past. All the while, I try to see these subjects with my adult eyes, the way I might have seen them as a young boy... eager to learn, with that same sense of awe and adventure, wonder and excitement.

Statement on "Technical Difficulties":

My submissions for "Technical Difficulties" are two works from 2008, in which I explore a darker corner of my imagination. It's a place inhabited by twisted machines with human faces, as well as my gargantuan "iron gods." Rather than becoming an alienation of humanity, these characters actually play a mirror image of us. The lesser figures are pressed beneath the weight of their banal duties. While the larger gods are physical embodiments of society's sway, and our endless need to define something greater than ourselves, in the hope that it will provide us with answers and, ultimately, salvation.
