Originally from the Northwest, Counsel Langley received a BFA in Metals from Massachusetts College of Art, Boston in 1999. Metalsmithing’s emphasis on small-scale details and rich surfaces directly impacts her technique as a painter. Her work has been exhibited in several Northwest solo and juried shows, and was selected for publication in Visual Codec’s One Shot. Using acrylics, inks and immodest amounts of glitter, her recent paintings explore her memories of urban spaces, as well as the look of circuitry, fluid turbulence, weather, diagrams, and outer space. She currently lives in Port Townsend, decidedly not an "urban space," with her husband and two daughters.
This dot is the boss of that dot. This color is “on,” that one is “off.” Electricity flows through the black lines, the blue ones are paths to travel . . . When I'm painting I like to pretend I'm broadcasting on pirated radiowaves. Encoding stories about the stuff of life—embarrassment, triumph, use and overuse of resources, production of offspring, isolation, mundane chores, connections of intimate understanding, oppression, exultation—transmitting my data in lo-fi stereo.
While being strongly influenced by the look of outer space, computer chips, dramatic weather, electric circuits, decay, plans and diagrams, b-rate sci-fi control panels, and fluid turbulence, my dominate subject matter remains urban spaces. Why and where we build them and the things we attempt once in them.
Regardless of what story a particular piece is telling there is always an element of what we build interacting with the natural world. The mighty city rendered fragile and timid in the face of a dramatic storm. The wealth of the earth being eroded and used up to fuel the needs of the city. And, every now and then, the two achieve a pristine balance.

My Urban Obsession
This is a culmination of a several-year-long exploration of my memories of urban spaces—the effect cities have had on me, both visually and emotionally.
When I began this series I did not venture away from a disembodied vantage point looking at a cityscape on the horizon. Now, with this collection, many new points of view have aggressively presented themselves—from an airplane, amidst the skyscrapers, in particular districts, exposure of a vast underground upon which the city is built, careening down the freeway, as well as fantasies of cities being completely remade or everlasting, afloat on a cloud.
I also present a suite of bridges. Bridges fascinate me for both their physical beauty and as a metaphor for being in a "suspended" state of mind, in-between or ambivalent. I am interested in the impudent will it takes to decide to build a bridge, to say, "It is tough to get over there, and I want to. Frequently!" And, I am moved by the trust it takes to cross a bridge one did not build.
P.S. If you doubt the obsession, then you haven't noticed the dots.
